Over the past few weeks I have posted about dropping my MTB and my freebee commuter in the quest of obtaining a Touring bike to use to commute as well as load up with gear. My first though was the accepted standard in the Touring forum - the Surly LHT. However my initial search put me on to a custom steel frame from a well respected builder in the UK made with the finest columbus tubing (can you say big $$s). Today the pendulum swung. I noticed a lot of people have built up a Soma Double cross frame as a touring bike. This might be a nice inexpensive option - take the Gary Fischer, strip it and use most of the stuff on a Cross style bike. I was initially thinking of using some of my old campy Veloce parts which I stripped of the Simoncini when she got the Chorus build last summer. But this might be a better option. I could get the job done for well under $1K and possibly even under $500 considering the sale of the Kaitia frame & fork.
Let's see where the pendulum swings next...
