Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Pulling Cranks

So it turns out I did strip out one of the cranks on my Bianchi (having a pedal clipped to your shoe but not the crank does you NO good!) and just tried using a regular crank extracter to pull it, but it didn't fit. Goatmeal had the feeling that the road crank arm he was going to loan me wouldn't fit either.

What tool do you need to pull 165mm cranks off of a track bike? Can you use a regular road crank once you have it off? My left leg is a little longer anyways, don't think the size difference would worry me too much.

I've got to start getting the right tools to work on her, so she lives through many more years of my abuse :)

If you've stripped the threads off the crankarm, then you've got problems as all crank pullers I know require those threads to seat the tool prior to pulling the crank. See http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQcrkarm.shtml

When you say it didn't fit, I'm not sure if you meant it's not threading on or it the crank holes was physically larger or smaller than the tool. The length of the crank arm is irrelevant AFAIK. The only issue you may have with interchangability of the cranks, apart from splined vs. tapered, is that some cranks require specific lengths of bottom bracket spindle. This because the cranks may bottom out on shorter spindles. The taper is the same, but Campy uses a smaller starting diameter than, say, Shimano.

I'm not sure if track spindles may have different tapers, though.

I'm pretty sure it's tapered, Goatmeal brought over a Park CCP 2 - the outer part threaded on fine, but the square was too small for the center part of it to fit through. The square was a lot smaller than on the two arms he brought over.

The arm itself isn't stripped, it's the part that you thread the pedals into.

The crank arms say Bianchi, and the dust caps say ormega - don't know if that helps at all...

I'll probably end up just biting the bullet and taking it to the LBS when I get paid, but I do need to figure out what tool I need... Till then I'm stuck on my winter beater...

The Park CWP-6 that [165] listed has 11.3 mm tip as the smallest. If the hole is smaller than that, unless there is a special tool available, you might be able to insert a short piece of round bar as a plug to fit the hole and press against that. The press fit crank chapter is free online. It may have some mention of smaller crank arm holes and tools to deal with them. They have a pretty comprehensive list of extractor tools in the chapter. I should get back to work, before someone walks in on me :D
