Bicycle Mechanics - tried search- can somebody explain chain differences- What do I need for an old 10...

speed? It used to be that a chain was a chain but now I see 5,7,8,9 and 10 speed chains which I assume are rear freewheels. So what do I need for a 35 year old 10 speed?
Thanks, Bob Skillman Ellicott City MD
you need a chain that's designed for a 5-speed cassette.
"5-speed chain."
If I'm not mistaken, 5 and 6 speed cassettes use the same chain, though.
A KMC Type 50 or SRAM PC 48 should work just fine.
You should be able to use any 8-speed chain on your old bike. You don't need any fancy for performance reasons though the better chains will be more rust resistant. You will need a chain tool to drive out one of the rivets holding the old chain together. The new chain will probably be too long so save the old chain and use it as a guide to remove the extra links from the new one.

SRAM PC-48 is best value. Get a power-link, so that once it is the correct size, you can attatch and remove it with no tools.
