A 10 buck buy looks nice enough but I still am puzzled over the crank. It is like a free wheel. Are these rare? of a sorts?.....

I'll venture a guess that it has a variation of the Shimano Positron system which is a precursor of Index shifting.

The Shimano Front Freewheel System (FFS) was introduced to allow shifting while stopped.

That bike has the Shimano Front freewheel System. It allows shifting whenever the bike is moving forward. They usually work pretty well. Hard to get parts for them...positron derailler, solid wire shifter cable. The rear cogset is semi fixed, that is real hard to find! The bike frame is standard and it can be converted to a normal drivetrain with little trouble. Enjoy the ride.
