"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Disc on a budget--installed a Wheelbuilder.com disc cover...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looks pretty nice. Installation was fairly simple--as long as you remember to serially tighten all the screws as you go, the cover centers itself pretty nicely on the wheel.

Wheelbuilder.com did a nice job pre-cutting for this wheel--a Reynolds Solitude.

It's a little involved because you have to remove the cassette, etc to install, but that's no big deal with the right tools. I'll be using it at a tri next weekend... It'll do while I save up for my Zipp disc. :D

Going deeper in the front ?

Yeah, I'm trying out some 808s and 1080s this season--not sure which one I'll go with yet, though I'm leaning toward the 808. Definitely going with the 900 disc in back.

how much does it weigh?

That much? Really? gawd, that's depressing. Didn't seem like that much...

Any sense of how much time/speed/watts the cover gets you vs a 404 or 808?

Why would you even bother with an actually disc wheel if you've got the cover?

real discs are a lot lighter and also more aero.

not more aero. lighter by a long shot. and they sound cool.

You don't think a Sub 9 is more aero than a disc cover? The cover has those screws sticking out, and the gap between the real rim and the cover, and it probably moves a little bit.

they have done tests on these things. Don't believe me. Look it up for yourself.

the only reason I want a disc is the roar ;)

My wheelbuilder disc only lasted about four races, then it started having bulges.

Don't know if anyone else had similar issues, but for me it was only a stopgap.

Don't you have some very deep Blackwell wheels?

Don't you have some very deep Blackwell wheels?

Didn't Blackwell go out of business? If so, there's the whole warranty thing to worry about

I have one of the covers and hve used it in tts. They cut it for my powertap but didn't cut it for my rim. I was in a hurry and didn't specifiy that the rim was a 30 mm rim. Result .....holes didn't line up. I ended up cutting my own holes because I needed it for the next morning.

Worked fine but I want a disc.

I'm nervous about carbon wheels with no warranty, so I decided to switch to Zipps this season after BR went bust--I want a company that'll actually be around for a while, and Zipp's support is outstanding. My first post-residency paycheck should cover that just fine. :)

Not to say that the Blackwells weren't incredible wheels, and I never had a problem while I had them, but the idea of a big dude like me riding carbon hoops with no warranty or crash replacement makes me nervous. Neurotic? Maybe, but hey.

Only a bulged rim w/disc cover is more aero than the aero discs, or at least in the same league (assuming you are comparing lenticulars to lenticulars).

Weight does not matter at all unless you are going up big hills.
