This is an update to my previous post : 17 year old cyclist randomly slain
(http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=544323)
Police now have more evidence, and here is what their spokesman said:
Metts said Davis was on the way to see his 15-year-old girlfriend just before 4 a.m. Wednesday when the suspect drove by. Davis was talking to her on a cell phone and, in the course of biking, apparently was not paying attention — prompting some motorists to blow their horns at him, Metts said.
The suspect got mad enough at Davis that he took out his anger on the youth, Metts said.
“We believe (the suspect) was aggravated by Davis and he just shot him. It looks like from our investigation that he may also have gotten out and stomped” Davis after the shooting, Metts said. He said the suspect “was in a pretty foul mood.”
This could have been prevented if he'd been riding with a mirror.

Did they mention if he was wearing a helmet?

So there is at least one confirmed death because a cyclist was using a phone while biking.

yes and unlike car drivers on the phone it was the cyclist who died. While I agree he shouldn't have been on the phone he shouldn't have been killed for it. If I killed every driver I see on the phone there would be about 10 drivers fewer every day......now there is a plan....:innocent:

4 AM, and the road is so busy that there's a distracted cyclist, motorists honking at him, and a motorist whose murderous rage is triggered by road conditions?

After the first few days you'd probably start to see fewer drivers on phones.

Remember the perp had just shot his g/f moments before. Perhaps he was angry at the cyclist for hindering his escape.
The article said " the suspect was in a pretty foul mood."

Yeah, I know. I'm just surprised at all the people out on the road at 4 AM.

I wonder which crime will be punished more severely. The murder of the gf or the murder of the cyclist? Knowing how justice for cyclists who are killed really works and what really happens no one should be surprised if Taylor gets just a slap on the wrist for killing Davis and receives the full punishment for killing his gf. The court system will make it a point to clearly state for which crime he is really punished for. They'll probably do something like say it is a low class felony or serious misdemeanor for killing the cyclist but a very high class felony for killing his gf. Taylor will probably onle receive something like 90 days and/or community service, maybe, for killing the cyclist and receive either life in prison or the death penalty, depending on the states laws for killing his gf.

Cyclists as well as motorists can be the prone to the same bad habits. This just goes to show that no matter which vehicle you're operating, it's important to pay attention at all times. I feel for the cyclist and his family and I hope no one else suffers the same fate.

This is pretty obvious and it is a shame that people need reminding of this fact.
How many other dad's will let their 15 year old daughter have friends come over at 4am? Especially a boy? So many things are wrong with this whole story.
the south'll never change. mass well be 1984. makes you sick i'm telling you
