Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was wondering about something the other day and that took me on a mind trip and wound up somewhere else. ;)

There must be something you have been wondering about and never thought to ask so now is your chance.

Example.

I wonder why manhole covers are round? Hmmmm

Someone else answers. So the lid doesn't fall down the hole.

So what do you wonder about? Make this a free-for-all.

It's round because of heat expansion, cold contraction. If it was square the hole it is covering would crack at the corners.

Speaking of such shapes, can anyone tell me which is better (and why) - to dig a round hole while transplanting a plant or is it better to dig a square hole? (I already know the answer, just wondering who else knows).

Round, because the inverse of the ratio of poo fits better.

dodecahedron. But it has to be a perfect dodecahedron.

Speaking of geometric shapes, do all cats get chubby in their later years?

Oh, and the reason the manhole covers are round is truely because that is the shape that won't allow the lid to fall into the hole. Any other shape and you can lose the lid down the hole.

From http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-blu1.htm

It’s a direct translation of the Spanish sangre azul. Many of the oldest and proudest families of Castile used to boast that they were pure bred, having no link with the Moors who had for so long controlled the country, or indeed any other group. As a mark of this, they pointed to their veins, which seemed bluer in colour than those of such foreigners. This was simply because their blue-tinted veins showed up more prominently in their lighter skin, but they took it to be a mark of their pure breeding.

There has to be a question that can't be found on the internet, can you come up with one. :)

12 be right, your turn. You're supposed to ask a question, thems the rules. :)

If it takes an hour to dig a hole how long does it take to dig half a hole?

I feel so childish.

Harvest season is months off but school is close to getting out for the summer and I must be giddy with delight.

how did the term "upper crust" come about?

overthehillmedi
05-26-09, 10:52 PM
because the old ovens quite often overcooked(burnt) the bottom crust therefore the "elite" took the top(upper) crust of the bread to eat and the peasants got the bottom.waste not, want not.

Who can name the FOUR sides of the fire triangle?

Fuel, oxygen, heat, and a sustained chemical reaction, thus making it a tetrahedron. "Fire triangle" is so second grade.

I wonder why these ginger crisps I'm eating have to explode into over 9000 pieces when I drop them onto the floor...

To decide once and for all which is better, Coke or Pepsi.

Ouch, that hurts. Sorry to keep it simple. :):D

Good answer though.

As the world is a sphere, there is no answer.

OK. :o

But this time try using the common usage of lattitude and longitude including the International date line.

And a yellow is still a yellow, you could call an orange a yellow but it won't come. :)
