Exacto knife, old record cover, spray paint. And a bit of spare time.

i've also seen home silkscreening kits at hobby stores. my friend picked one up. it came with a reuseable screen, a squigee, four ink colors, emulsion, etc. they're not great, but they certainly do the trick. it holds up better than a ink jet transfer or spraypaint (i have made many homemade tshirts done those ways as well) or you could always use a brush and some acrylic paint, if you're feeling exceptionally crafty. i used to work at a silkscreen shop and it would probably cost way more than it would be worth to set up a job for just one to a handful of shirts.

There's a silkscreening place over on Michigan. I forget the pricing policy, but if you do the work yourself it's pretty cheap. Let me know what you want and I can work on designing something if that's cool.

You can do it yourself - pick up a silkscreen set at either Pearl or The Art store for about 50 bucks. Then go here (http://reddingk.com/) and download the PDF file at the very bottom - also great for zines, etc. The essential Repro Guide.

As for who can do it for you - Propaganda (http://www.propagandatshirts.com/) on Milwaukee in Wicker Park might be able to hook you up with a small batch. They moved to there, the Lakeview one is gone.

Online, you can do it in batches, check out either http://www.vgkids.com, http://www.contagiousgraphics.com, http://www.jbugprints.com. I've used all three for various projects over the years - bands, sites, design jobs.

The Gocco option is costly - you'll have to invest about $200 for the fabric printing kit - the regular is about $120 but it's a lot of fun indeed.

A few of us did a batch of silkscreened posters (200) for an event for a site I co-founded in Chicago (http://www.gapersblock.com - site currently iffy due to DNS issues but check it out tomorrow). It's your best bet, it's low cost and you can do as many as you like.

On a side and related note, I was thinking of designing up a batch of shirts, we'll see what happens, given time.

i agree with the spraypaint idea. if you don't want to cut up your record covers, use one of the pbr boxes that are bound to be lying around. or maybe that's just me.

that's actually how i'm making shirts for my small but awesome williamsburg bicycle crew. easy, cheap, and everyone seems to want them.

Seriously, though - if you want something specific, I'll design it. I'm always in need of new graphic design stuff. I don't do it professionally, but I need to build my folio up anyway, so ideas to play around with are always welcome/wanted.

Here's a taste of the ind of stuff I've done recently.

Step...
(1) Get/create a high resolution image of what you want to have on the shirt (using Photoshop, Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/), a scanner, et cetera)
(2) Get a free account on CafePress (http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/)
(3) Upload your image to CafePress, and make it into a t-shirt
(4) Buy your own t-shirt from CafePress for ~$14

For those interested in doing anything with the cafeshops option, just don't expect too much. Their shirts are done with what amounts to a souped-up iron-on transfer. Not fantastic, but better than one you'd make yourself with transfers from Office Max. They do use good shirts, though that probably doesn't justify their pricing architecture. The only reason I have my "Ged Fixed" shirts available through Cafeshops is because I do not currently have silk screening facilities at my disposal. that said, if I got enough interest to do a run of them screened in white on black shirts, I might consider getting a shop to make a few.

Ah. The good folks in Wicker Park. Strange Cargo does something similar.
