Touring - Touring Haines with toddler
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've read a lot of posts on the Haines highway. I'm ironing out details for my first tour with husband and two year old in tow. We're travelling mid July, and I plan on shipping our bikes to Juneau, plus our Burley bike trailer too. We're being loaned another trailer from a cyclist there so we'll both be pulling freight for the ride. Luckily we live in a similar altitude so we're training on similar climbs now, just not for days at a time. The road is being repaved before we get there, the Klaune Bike Relay is next month so I imagine the road construction can't be too bad. The mosquitoes are going to be a nightmare with a toddler that hates to wear clothes. What else can a momma do to make this as fun for her family as possible? Will the Deet spray break down the tent and cycling clothes? And is potassium a deterrent or a come on for mosquitoes? I've heard both. Thanks for any help you can give!

Good luck with your tour. It is a magnificent ride. I've done chunks of it from Haines Jct to Haines in the Kluane - Chilkat relay. How far are you going?
I would imagine that you have looked at the profile. Climbing out of Alaska is definitely a challenge, but slow and steady will do it.
Once on top, you will be above or near treeline for some time (breezy), which really isn't mosquitoe country. Generally speaking, I expect that you will find that the bugs will not be that bad. Locally, there are pockets of low lying wetlands and lakes further toward the Junction that could be bad, but having lived in many areas of the north for the past 25 years, I don't think you are going to have a major problem with the bugs along much of this route.
(I lifted this graph from the Kluane - Chilkat site.... I don't suppose they know that it has a mispelled title)

We are riding from Haines to Haines Junction and back again. We have projected 3 days each way with a rest day in Haines Junction in between. Evie Mae can handle about 4 hours in the trailer (with a nap during this time) but no more than that. Thanks for the map, it looks like a beast of a climb.
