A little background, I have been riding a bike for about a year, 15-20 miles 3 times a week and then a long ride on the weekend of 30-40 miles. I haven't run in a while but started again recently and ran 1.5 miles with relative ease, and haven't swam Competitively, ever. I can swim, I am not graceful or fast by anyone's imagination.

I am wanting to do a duathlon by the end of the summer but noticed there is a short course tri at the same time. It consists of .3 mile swim, 11.25 mile ride and a 3 mile run. It is at the end of August, and I am not really concerned about the bike or the run portions, but the swim is another story. I can train for the run or bike during the week pretty easily, but I really only have the weekends to swim. Can I do this triathlon with only training in the pool once a week, MAYBE twice a week?

I definitely have no expectations other than finishing, preferably not last.

Nope, you're not too optimistic. I think it would be fine.

If at all possible though - swimming twice a week will make a huge difference over only swimming once per week.

I guess a follow up to the original question would be, will it be bad if I swim say Saturday morning and then turn around and do a long bike ride or run in the afternoon?

That, my friend, is the training plan of many triathletes. Double workouts are common in most training plans.

You would finish today. Google 0 to 1650 swimming. You'll be amazed at how quickly you improve.

I could not even complete the first set on the 0 to 1650 but I'm going to keep on going. Thinking about signing up for my first sprint on July 19th. Reading this I should be okay?
