The best (life and cost) batteries for me are:

Lithium,
Alkaline, or
Rechargable NiMH (or other please specify?)

To Run:

http://ecom1.planetbike.com/planetbike/media/3040.jpg
(Up to 100 hours of run time on (2) AA and (3) AAA alkaline batteries respectively)

Use:

5 days a week, 2 - 4 hr, for 6m of the year, for the next 5yr

Criteria:

Lowest cost to run assuming they will give me 100hr plus before replacement/recharge under the conditions of use above.

Thanks for your advice and explantions on this specific question.....

Eneloop rechargeables are the best bang for the buck for you.

best bag for the buck, nimh rechargeables, I personally like the Duracell 2650's.. Longest lasting would be Lithiums..

If I get 150hr from alkaline and I can buy a box of 24 Duracell batteries for $24 = 2.7yr of light, vs
I have to buy 4 rechargable batteries and a charger that costs $54 = unlimited life?

Is it really worth it or will the eneloops start not work after 5yr?

Real time estimates of run times are much lower than what you state.. In the long run nimh will be much cheaper.. You can go to walmart and find batteries and charger for well under 20.00

Yes, it's worth it.

If the Nimh have to be replaced after 5 years that's 4 batteries going in landfill and your running costs after replacing them will be much lower because you already have the charger.

Better 4 Nimh being disposed of than the 48 duracell you'd have used in that time.
