Classic & Vintage - Which frame is better, Free Spirit or Peugeot?

Gee, call me crazy, but I'd go with the Peugeot. :rolleyes:

Freespirit was usually a cheap low end bike boom gas pipe
bike with cheap components.
However, There were a few that were built with 531 tubing and
had Campy record components. Not sure who actually built them but
it sure wasn't sears. . .
Go with the Peugot unless you know you've got one of the
better free spirits.
What model Peugot? U08? PX10?

Like Marty said there were a few quality FreeSpirits but they're rare.

I'm not a real fan of hi-tensile steel Peugeots but, with the exception noted above, they're alot better than FreeSpirits.

Its model is PS10. Its printed on the top bar of the frame.
The only reason I asked because I couldnt remove the bar that holds the handle bar. That part snapped and i tried to remove but it wont move. I removed all the brackets and stuff but still no luck. Is that part(neck) connected to the forks, like melted in/>?

The FreeSpirit is a Sears bike and even their best model was no better if not worse than Peugeot worse model! If that Peugoet is a PX10 GET IT!!!!

In the 1960s, Free Spirits were made in Austria by Steyr-Daimler-Puch and were about comparable with basic Peugeot AO-8s. Later Free Spirits were Huffy (Murray?) boat anchors, inferior to any Peugeot I have ever seen.

I believe that lotek is correct. Sears used to sell a "Ted Williams Sport Special" model that had Columbus tubing with Campy components. Hardly something to sneeze at. btw, it also had Free Spirit stickers on it.

It sounds like it has a jammed stem. Check the Sheldon Brown web site or the repair section of this site for advice & if all else fails, your local bike shop may be able to remove it for you.

Cool!!! I just worked on one of those yesterday... very nice bike. I was wondering if you would happen to know if it was all fillet brazed? We noticed the (lack of) welds and thought maybe it was fillet.

The fillet brazing was done on the Varsities and Continentals?, I believe. These were lugged frames and welded like the Paramount. Since you were working on one, do you know the tool that is needed to remove the freewheel? I need to replace the rear axle? Thanks for any help.

Varsities & Contis were actually joined by a Schwinn proprietary process called "electro-forged". Check it out...

Good catch Dan! You are right about the Varsities & Contis. My Voyageur was built in Japan by Panasonic and was welded like the Paramounts.

i have voyageur parts i took off a damaged frame. anyone interested because i think it would be good for all the parts to go back on another voyageur. and if the stem is stuck in the forks you can drill relief holes in the stem and the top part will come right off and you can at least save the frame if the forks are damaged.

Are they off of a World Voyageur, a Voyageur II, or a Voyageur 11.8??

I didn't take anything off. It's all original equipment except the tires, of course.

Hey I think I got one of these bikes. Do you know of any links I can go to to find our more about this bike or find replacement parts?
