Bicycle Mechanics - Why are steerer extenders steel?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I checked out a few quill extender thingies to put on my old threaded
one inch steel forks, and I'm wondering why the ones I've seen are
chunky steel, when they're just doing the job of a traditional aluminum head-stem.
Why is it so?

It might have to do with the additional stresses that it has to deal with. I'd suggest a stem with a longer quill like a Nitto Technomic stem as a neater solution, though.

I've seen those in aluminum before. In fact I have one made by Cinelli. Check out some of the larger mailorder/internet sites. Check with your LBS first, that's where I got mine. I've never had a problem with it.

They're steel because because the pricetag says $4.99. The aluminum ones have bigger numbers attached.
