Fifty Plus (50+) - value of multiple rides per week

You guys already know this, but I am experiencing firsthand the benefit of riding several days per week, instead of just Saturday and/or Sunday mornings. For the past couple of weeks I have been riding 15 miles / 25km round trip to work on Tuesdays and Thursdays (15 hours per week at greatly reduced pay sure beats collecting unemployment insurance), plus about 20-25 mi / 30-40 km every Wednesday morning with the YMCA, in addition to some weekend rides. Today the group split into two for the Torrey Pines grade. I chose the shorter, steeper switchback road through the park itself and actually reached the meeting point at the top first, which is something I haven't been able to do for awhile with this group. The Bianchi is my fastest bike on climbs and sprints, but not by that much.

I am strong for riding about 30 hour each week..
I agree that more short rides are probably better for your health than just long rides on the weekends. I have just got back to commuting part time. Besides being a great way to start and or end your day it will make those weekend rides better too. I spent almost my entire day in meetings today and by 3:00 my mind kept drifiting to that nice shaded back road that makes the first portion of my ride home.

I would like to average 20 miles/day 6 days a week, but I'm now doing about 40 miles/day 3 days a week. It only takes an extra 65 minutes to add 20 miles to a 20 mile ride, while it takes much more time to (about 2 hours) to dress, ride, shower & change for just a 20 mile ride.

I try to ride for fitness/fun at least 4 days per week some times 5. I ride to work as well every day I can - but that is at a slow leasurely pace and only a few miles each way - so I don't even count it as a ride. I try to get in 100 miles/week for fitness/fun. When it is all working - I feel great. This time of year the weather sometimes does not cooperate.

My club rides MWF. Most of my group rides are in the 40-60 mile range. Moderate speed. Hilly. Seems about right for me. I always look forward to my rides.

I have about a 15-mile RT commute. I like to commute 2 or 3 times a week just to "keep my hand in." I feel like I've done enough to maintain my fitness without a big layoff, but I don't feel like I have to do a major training ride every night. For some reason when I go on an after-work ride on my road bike, I feel like I have to go at least 30 miles to make it worthwhile. The commute makes a nice "filler" :)

I retired in January and recently have just started hopping on the bike and going when I feel like it, at least 2-3 times mid-week. Even find excuses to ride, "gotta go get the mail", "think I will ride my car downtown for lunch instead of driving, etc. Beginning to build up the mileage but haven't gone much more than 30 miles at a whack. Basically just enjoying it.:)

Just about any kind of physical activity is going to be good for you. Even if you cannot ride on a certain day, you can always jog or walk. This morning I did a 2 mile run.

Today is day 149 of this year and I have ridden 91 days thus far (61%). My average ride this year is 27.5 (s)miles and average speed around 13 mph. I much prefer multiple day short rides to long weekend rides. But thats just being a slo spoke.

Big advantage of multiple rides per week is more PIE and stops the wife from nagging me about the undone chores around the house----Till I get home that is.
