#1 Do not ride with someone who has an electrically assisted bike. I got my ass handed to me by my dad who had 2 loaded panniers, and was wearing a button down shirt among other things. :notamused:

#2 55 miles is a long way to ride. Two packets of Gu on an empty stomach do not make for a wholesome meal.

#3 Pancakes and beer go together very well.

#4 55 miles is a long way to ride. More than 5 hours sleep is required.

#5 55 miles is a long way to ride. Freakin' crap it's a long way.

I know. My first ride over 20 miles was just a few years ago. I rarely tread into the 30+ range. Once in a while I'll do 45 miles, but this is my first half century in a year or two. :)

Drink endorush. Remember to read the caution label first. It is probably as big as the bottle.

At least inflate your climbing numbers.
55 miles is decent if you climb something like 6000 feet.

Actually, my dad and I only rode for about 10 miles. I rode to work with him and then split off and did the rest of the torturous ride. :D

I measure intensity by ability to walk up and down stairs. I'm avoiding doing that as much as possible right now.

What is this "miles" thing that everyone keeps mentioning?

I measure my rides in "fun" of the destination. "Miles" sounds like some sort of self-punishment.

I like to measure my rides by how much ice cream I can eat afterward and still fit into my jeans. :)

That's even better!

I caught a tailwind on the looooooooong slightly downhill section of the ride. I did 11 miles in about 20 minutes. It was stupid fast.

If my legs feel like I tore them off it was a good ride. I have had 20 mile rides that took more effort than a century.

You're right about the latter.

#3 Pancakes and beer go together very well.

Not when you want 55 miles to NOT be a long way to ride, no offense.

#4 55 miles is a long way to ride. More than 5 hours sleep is required.

I did my first century on one hour of sleep just fine.

NOTE: Good thing you didn't post this over in roadie land, where 55 miles is a recovery ride for most.

That's normal. Either your nutrition isn't right, or you need to train more.

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish, DJ.

If you prefer lighter alternatives, peanut butter (as mentioned) is excellent, as is coffee and gels. Usually works for me.

They're not really cycling, were they?

My dad works 10 miles from home. He's portly and has tried to commute on a normal bike, but wasn't able to. He sets his speed at about 8 mph and then pedals. We were cranking up hills at 20mph or so and I was having a helluva time keeping up with him. He works, though. He gets his heartrate up, his legs hurt, he spins, that's for sure.

It was either this, or drive to work every day. What would you choose?

You're right about the latter.

Not when you want 55 miles to NOT be a long way to ride, no offense.
I ride for fun and so I eat pancakes and drink beer. I'll never be a racer, but I will be able to do more of these rides.

I did my first century on one hour of sleep just fine.
I did my first triathlon on 5 hours sleep, no dinner, and a lot of beer. Did better than I was aiming for, too.

NOTE: Good thing you didn't post this over in roadie land, where 55 miles is a recovery ride for most.Roadies tend to write responses like yours which is why I don't bother posting in there, no offense. ;)
