Longtime mtn. biker, newbie to cross. I'm looking at an 04' Kona, Jake the Snake as my first bike. The only knock i've been reading here in the forum is that the steel fork is the only weakpoint on an otherwise solid platform.

The shop is willing to swap/deal parts at purchase. I don't need a fork that is more expensive than the entire rest of the bike. I'm looking for suggestions as to a solid middle of the road Carbon fork for cross bikes. Any suggestions?

the only really affordable carbon cyclocross fork is the winwood muddy and the same fork under different brands. it's not the best or lightest fork out there but, it will smooth the ride somewhat [more noticeable when you ride on higher pressure tires] and it will shave about 350-400 g [almost a pound] off your bike. i have a winwood on a major jake frame, and have no complaints.

I have Sintema full carbon forks in my cross bikes, wonderfull to ride and by the amount I crashed last season and the fact that the previous owner (GB Team Manager & 2003 national Veterans Champs) had raced them for 3 seasons v.strong as well
