Triathlon - A small victory in the pool, but a victory nonetheless...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have to take whatever victories I can get in the water...
I'd been increasing my distance, but I was still taking breaks in backstroke or taking a quick stop every 200-300 to catch my breath.
I have a sprint coming up on Sunday, with a swim of 550m. I'm fully planning to stop, backstroke a bit, etc. But tonight at the pool, I settled into a rhythm and swam a full 550. No backstroke, all freestyle, all flip turns. Took it easy but managed to finish with a strong fast 50.
The confidence boost from tonight is HUGE. I feel awesome! This swim thing is starting to actually be fun!

Very cool!!!! I did my first 1000 yard swim on Friday and agree that it's huge psychological boost to those of us who aren't fish! I am a little jealous, just starting to put in flip turns and if I'm doing 150+ sets I don't even try them (screws up my rhythm too much).
Way to go and good luck on the upcoming race! My first is in a week and I'm so excited!

good luck Dr Pete! Sounds like you are ready.
When you get out there, set goals for yourself: "I'm going to do 10 more/20 more strokes before I rest"- remember, you are expending the same energy in a doggy paddle or treading water as you are making forward motion, so just set a comfortable pace.
I'm kind of scared to do a back stroke, as it would be difficult to figure out what direction? I'd probably head way off in the wrong direction. But, that might just be me :)

Backstroke is a great way to rest for a few seconds, though. And I can hold as straight a line with that as I can with freestyle... :o

Breast stroke works great for that too - if your worried about not seeing where you are going.
