Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Need a new Hub - opinions

So I just stripped the threads on my P.O.S. Sovos/Quando hub and I need a replacement. It is a large flange, 36 hole hub with crappy loose bearings.

Any recommendations for a sub $100 hub? The Suzue Pro Max looks about right. Any word on the quality?

I prefer sealed bearings if at all possible. The Sovos hub lasted me about 1 year of everyday commuting 17 miles in all kinds of weather so I can't complain too much. I think it may have been the P.O.S. stamped cog that I recently put on there, so I'll be sure to ditch that one. I just see this as an opportunity to upgrade the hub. I hope to be able to re-use the spokes and rim seeing that they are in good condition.

IRO, KOGSWELL, VAN DESSEL it all depends on that spacing but those are some pretty good sealed hubs.

i really like my surly hubs. they are sealed with enduromax bearings.

I've got a pair of Suzue Pro Max that are about 2 years old. No problems yet. I don't ride that wheel set thru the winter (the Surly gets that honor) They're a good value though. Surly is another tough hub that you may want to consider. It's not as pretty as the pro max, but it works well.

I guess I forgot to mention that I am going to try and keep my rim and spokes so I will be needing a 36 hole hub. So far, the Suzue looks like the one because I am not about to drop $150 on a Phil Wood.

Most hubs have different enough dimensions that it will be tough to find a a match.

I've got 2 Surly hubs that have stood up to lots of abuse. I think they do a 36 hole, but not positive.

I wouldn't build a new wheel on used spokes. I've been warned against it from trustable mechanics. A new set that are the correct length are only around 13$.

Whoa, that sucks. I was seriously looking at these too.
But don't you just need the Miche carrier if you want to use the Miche cogs?
Couldn't you still use the generic Shimano type cog?

the hubs aren't proprietary, just the cogs. the hubs look like any track hub. you screw on this splined carrier ring that goes where the cog would go. you put the splined cog onto the carrier, then tighten it all down with a normal lock ring. theoretically you could turn any track hub into this splined setup, but john from business cycles suggests only using the carrier on miche hubs.

yes. get new spokes. they aren't expensive.

i've been essentially beating the hell out of the surlys on nyc streets for a few years now and they are solid. they need to occasional cone tightening, but that's to be expected. otherwise, solid and cheap.

I bought a pair of Miche track hubs from Business Cycles last summer. Prompt service. The hubs have held up well and haven't had any issues with them laced to Open Pros. I will reach my full verdict when the time comes to replace the bearings in these hubs. I'll see how well that goes.

Isn't it the Miche cranks which are proprietary? Some funky BCD?
