UPDATE WITH NEW INFO

DATE - SATURDAY JULY 25th

START LOCATION - ATHENIAN SCHOOL, parking @ Athenian after 8:30am, 8:30 or earlier use Creekledge Rd across Diablo Road

SUMMIT TIME - 10:30AM

HOW IT WORKS FOR RIDERS

Here's the concept - time yourself up Diablo South Gate from Athenian (route is here http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/BF-MtDiablo-KOM-Challenge ). Once you've got a time, I'll assign start times - most leisurely BF climber goes first, followed by the next fastest - delayed by the difference in their qualifying times, then the next fastest and so on. Theoretically if everyone equals their qualifying climbing time, we'd all finish at the summit together. This should make for a fascinating finish between folks who don't normally ride together on climbs :thumb:

HOW IT'LL RUN

I'll show up ahead of the first rider and have a departure list and watch/stopwatch. As each rider goes, we'll note the time on the list. I'll head up to the summit and pass off the list, leaving the fastest rider to bring up the list and stopwatch.

I'll leave ahead of my timed slot to get to the summit early. I'll be there with a check-in list to record the "official" climb time, take some pictures of everyone enjoying the summit wall together and give it some cowbell.

TIMES

Here is the scheduled departure time. I've PM'd some of you already, please take a look at the list, and your scheduled start time and PM me to confirm you're in. I suggest that you show up ready at least 15mins ahead of your scheduled slot (i.e. allow for traffic/mechanicals if you ride to the start etc.)

I've never ridden it before. Can I say 74 minutes?!

Theoretically, I'm in too. I'll have a time after this weekend.

My best (from last year) is 80 minutes. This year is more like 90.

I am in and looking forward for a heck of a traffic jam on the ramp. Prediction: massive peloton crash half way up the ramp.

This is called "The Handicapped Hurl Ride".
Works best when everyone already knows what they can do and then does it.

I ain't no KOM. More like the CJOM (Court Jester of the Mountain) or SASPOM (Sorry-@$$ed Slow Poke of the Mountain). If I can do the Devil Mountain in less than 150 minutes, I'd be surprised.

Which means I'd have to leave at 8:30.

Arrgh - league championship swim meet that weekend. I promised the kids I'd be there (and they're trying to rope me into doing the parents' relay, despite me getting tangled up in the lane lines doing back stroke last time around). So I'm out.

My time last weekend from the South Gate gate was 84 minutes (ok, ok, I'm slow, I get it. ) I'll grab my time from the school next weekend when I plan on doing a Double Diablo. (and a triple the next weekend and a quad the following weekend ... I'm obsessing on Death Ride prep. :) )

I'm picturing the finish as a giant tangle of bikes with one winner spit out the top like a watermellon seed.

As a new rider who got to the top of Diablo for the first time yesterday(N. Gate)this sounds interesting.

Aw crud. I was hoping this would be a chance to meet all of you. That's the day of the Mt Tam Double and I'm signed up for it. Sorry.

Awesome, this is going to be good.

kjfitz - sorry about that clash - hopefully this won't take out too many other BF'rs??

BTW - something's not right here - I appear to be the fastest. That's just plain wrong; need a good spread of times to make this interesting....

I won't know for sure until school starts, but I HOPE to be there.
I'm thinking 1:40, based on the last time I timed mysef up Southgate from the school.

I took a break at the junction, which doesn't show on my timer. So, whih no break I'll likely be even slower....

Garmin reports 11.1 miles, 3238 feet of up.
Markers 1 and 4 on the profile are the junction.

amazingly, the average is only 5.4%

Something must be wrong with your plotting software. I'm sure that last stretch is 90% not 16%.

I did last year's Challenge in 82, so since I'm now older, fatter and slower, put me down for 90.

I will have a chance to ride this tomorrow. I'll record my time, but it will be way slower than if I were just riding the Mt.

Might need to reschedule this already! I'll leave it a few more days but it'd be a shame to miss a big slice of the BF contingent due to a clash.

I think I could go faster the next time, especially if it's the only riding for the day.

I am tentatively in, no clue on the time to the top. I know last year from North Gate to rangers station was around 31 minutes.

Can we make Sat July 25th instead?

That's ok with me. My wife is interested in climbing it too. So we might get a sitter and I'll bring her along. Her time will be much slower. Probably more like an hour 45.

I would like to file a formal protest. George is sandbagging with his 90 minutes. Every ride that I've done with him he's way faster than me on the hills. Do not allow him to get away with this.

Curtis' 100 minutes sounds mighty suspicious, too.

Don't despair Cliff, remember the 10(ish)% rule - for any time that is "suspiciously good", the rider will be handed a backpack o' gravel and be invited to try again to get it closer to the claimed time. :thumb:

Hmm, I feel for you Henry - but I'm thinking this could get messy real quick. For me Sat>Sun as a rule - I'd like to hear from the folks who said they were not available for the Aug 1st date to see if we can rearrange. I may need to try to follow up by PM to detangle this already.

No sandbagging here, it's just that two months of short mileage and much higher good food and wine intake between a trip to France and some family visiting California have taken their toll. Not that I complain though.
Anyway I am planning to improve on my 90 minutes climb before the Challenge. It might be just what I need; instead of starting 10 or 20 minutes ahead of Cliff I might only have the necessary minutes to allow him to catch me up early so I can suck his wheel all the way to the top.

Yeah, right, George. How do you say BS in French?

Do you mean Bags of Sand??

You are right we reverse the order of the words. Sand Bagging in English becomes Bags of Sand in French (sacs de sable). Did I got your question right? For some reason I am not so sure.

My best time ever was 1:16:47. I have now been off the bike for two months. Hopefully I will be riding a little soon, but it seems unlikely that I will be back in shape by August. In any case, this ride will be a good motivator. Put me down for a new PR of 1:15:00 (75 minutes).
