Road Cycling - How long is your commute to your bike lane?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I usually take about 15min just to go to the nearest bike lane. But now im thinking of going to a further bike lane but it about a couple of miles going there.

I just want to know how long you guys commute going to where you usually bike.

I almost never use a bike lane. If there's one around, and it's going where I want to go, I'll follow it, but most of them are multi-use, often clogged with walkers and joggers and skaters and people pushing strollers. The speed differential is so great and bikes are so quiet that it's not really safe to be out there when it's busy, especially when so many people wear headphones. Ride the roads!

There are no bike lanes per se where I live. We do have wide (3-8 feet) paved shoulders on most arterial and major roads.

Err sorry guys, let me rephrase. How long do you bike to your destination where you start REALLY biking and going fast. ie. like Central Park or some nice road lanes.

Let's see, it's about 100 feet from my garage to the street. So, I'd say: 100 feet.

Maybe 20ft before I start riding down my hill at ~45.

It's a half mile to Highway 99 W in Oregon, where I ride 20 miles north to downtown Portland.

100 feet? you must live in a spacious neighbourhood.
Anyway... it's about 3 km for me

Nah, not really. We live in an older (for Sactown) home and the garage is detached and towards the back of the lot.

PriO asked "How long do you bike to your destination where you start REALLY biking and going fast...?" Maybe I misunderstood what PriO means by "REALLY biking" but since I'm usually late for work or the meetup, I hit the street and ride hard. I guess I consider the ride to be the destination.

It is 1.19 miles to the bike trail from my house. I ride over there and do my 20, or 22 and ride back home. It is very convenient, and I enjoy the un-interrupted time on the trail. I enjoy meeting other cyclists when I take a break at the halfway point, at a 750 foot long tunnel that goes through the Brushy Mountain. The hill climb back to my home ,from the trail,is the killer, but it seems to be getting flatter as time goes by. Best -

From my house to the road is 120 feet. So I'd say, 120 feet before I can ride fast.

About 3 miles from my place to the entrance of the nearest state park with a good training loop. I rarely ride there, though when I do it's a great place to be able to get into a good rhythm and not have to worry too much about traffic and stopping.

Most of my riding is commuting, so I'm 'REALLY biking and going fast' from the moment I leave the parking lot of our apartment complex, which I guess would be about 300 ft.
