Texas - Riding places- Airtex & I-45, Houston

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looks like I'll be staying in a motel around Airtex & I-45 in a couple of weeks- any good riding places in that immediate area?

Unfortunately, that is not a very bike-friendly area. Drive about 15-20 miles south to inside Loop 610 and there are numerous bike-friendly areas / communities (Memorial Park, White Oak MUP, Montrose, Museum District). On the west side of Houston there is also a nice long MUP running through Terry Hershey Park and George Bush Park (starts from Beltway 8 and stretches west past Highway 6).
I've also heard that there are some bike trails in the Woodlands (15 miles north), but someone else could probably elaborate better on those.

Made it down there and back. Unfortunately, your answer summed up the area pretty well. I did take my unicycle and rode around a little bit there by the motel. Downtown by the George R Brown Convention Center looks like a nice place to cruise around.
I did go up to the Woodlands on some other business. I drove around Panther Creek Drive while looking for my destination. There is a bike trail/ MUP there, but it's more suited for neighborhood families going 8 mph. Better than nothing, but having better roads in the first place would be a vast improvement. It's good to be home.

The hike/bike trails in the Woodlands are not good for a road bike. However, the drivers in the Woodlands are used to seeing cyclists in riding in the road, and the both Woodlands Pkwy and Research Forest have good shoulders. Drivers are courteous and give plenty of room to a person on a bike.
