Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - maxxis re-fuse or conti gatorskins?

which of these would be better for everyday commuting and rec? thanks

gatorskins have better puncture protection and will last longer than the re-fuses if you skid often, but have been know to have sidewall issues. i've have mine on for 6 months with no problems though. I think the gatorskin is a better tyre overall, but the re-fuse isn't bad. you would probably be happy with either.

I've ridden Gators exclusively for 2 years now. I'm on my....I wanna say 2nd front and 3rd rear. Very few flats, but yeah the sidewalls get...funny. They are not magic though I have slashed them open on glass before. No tire woulda held out against that though. Except maybe a factory-use tire....anyone ever had any Top Contacts or similar?

I've had a sidewall slashed when my wheel went into a grate with Gatorskins, but I doubt many tires would have fared better. But I like the ride and they've worn really well as both a front and rear (with moderate skidding) tire.

Yes, I have. No flats.....ever, and they wear forever.

8/10 gatorskin owners complain of sidewall tear.

ive switched to refuse myself.

If they're available in your area, I like Vitorria Randonneurs. I know Gator Skins are popular in my area too.

I haven't tried the Gatorskins, but I've been riding the Maxxis Refuse in pretty harsh NYC conditions for close to a year with no flats or any problems.

another vote for the refuse. they've done me well. provided by everyday commuting you don't mean going out and doing mad skids all day.

good selection. 8 months and no flats. I replaced the rear after 6 months. it was missing chunks of rubbering in three or four places and was so wore down that it changed how the tire rode.

i love my randonneurs...they are super tough and i can ride on trails...i don't skid often but i when i do i know that there is plenty of rubber to skid through and they slide nice

never knew about the sidewall issue until i popped into this thread -- by 25c gatorskins tore last month at the sidewall. fortunately the shop switched it out for me. unfortunately they threw on a 28c without my knowledge. >=(

23c and 25c gatorskins all have had sidewall tears. but my 28c haven't.

I am running gators right now and they are doing really well. But I have only had them on for a few weeks. My GF is running armadillos, and those seem to be indestructable. Lots of good choices out there, and I don't know if all of these are really that different. For 27 bucks from probikekit, the gatorskins seem to be the best deal, though.
