Bicycle Mechanics - setting my rear derailer+gears with new wires

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
topic pretty much explains what I need to do.
I removed my old gear wire that goes to the back wheel gears ( derailer? ) , and replaced it with a new one, but now I cant seem to set it right so the gears change in the back.
I have a mercalli hooligan downhill supercycle if that tells you anything.

Here, read this from the Park Tool repair section: http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQrindx.shtml on how to set and adjust your rear dérailleur.
Hope this helps.
