I have to tell someone.

A local bike club has slow, medium, fast & very fast ride groups. These are 40-50 mile rides, no racers except in the very fast group, just avid riders.

I joined the fast group, my first outing with this club.

Every bike, except one 1975 Raleigh Pro (Campy Nuovo Record) was CF de jour. This group would drop slower cyclists, and I was concerned that I might spin out, my 44 x 12-25 is good for about 35 mph.

Well, no problem, I did more than my share of leading. A couple riders said "good work-out".

I think I could of done it on knobbies, no joke. I have 700x28 tires, I looked like a Fred in this group. Half the group was fun to ride with & probably willing to maintain a better pace.

I could have shaved an hour of the ride if I was solo.

The slowest guy in the group said "Soma!?, what are those, is that a steel frame!?! I was waiting for him to ask me if I knew my front derauller was missing.

Do you have any issues with the 1x10 setup? What crankset are you using?

I've ordered a Shimano 105 50x39 crankset and am contemplating taking off the big ring and putting a guard there, with a jumpstop and going 39T with a 10 speed cassette on my commuter.

I'm using a Sram S300 CX compact double with a 44t on the big ring location.

Great set-up. No cross chain issues. Instant shifts. Smooth a quiet. 10 tight gears that do it all from 10 to 30+ mph. Each gear change is about a 1.5 mph shift or less than a 10 rpm change in cadence.

That should work, just check the chain line when on the smallest cog. Worst case you might have to add a spacer (if possible) to move the crank out. I look for a near perfect chain line on one of the middle cogs. That's where I spend most of my riding time. The smallest and largest gears see very little use.
