Anyone done this one?
Would like to break in my new bike (and self) on a relatively easy ride

Which portion?
I ride the lockport to middleport section now and then.

For the most part you can count on pavement or fine crush gavel. Great for MTB, and not too bad for road bikes if you have tough tires. very level, nice and protected. Only problem I ever have is crowding in some sections depending on the time of day and day of week.

Edited due to lag :)

Why would you break a new bike? Insurance fraud? Anyway, The Canal is the only thing us cyclists in western New York have because, you know... Cars+Biker=Lawyer Feesē.

I live in Spencerport, and the Canal is a pretty good place to ride in general. Although, people that aren't spinnin' may sometimes get in the way, especially when you can't get your tube out of your mouth to yell at them.

Then it's right back to Lawyer Feesē...

Eh?

Thanks.......perhaps I should have said riding and camping

Want to do the length from Buffalo, or just east of there to the Albany area, and maybe do the Finger Lakes area on the return

I'll be stashing my pikup truk and l'il dog in Hamburg, where I grew up and delivered the
@$#%^&^%$#$ Bflo Eve News thru sleet snow, rain fog and sun, on my trusty red and white Monarch. Cost 50$ new. New Trek is just a li'l bit more

I've riden the canal path from Middleport to Fairport. If you decide to ride it, be careful in the Rochester area from starting where the path goes under I-490, follows I-390 to the Genesee River. There have been muggings reported in that area.

Take a look at From Al-ba-ny to Buf-fa-lo, oh... (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/journal/?opts=300&doc_id=494) on crazyguyonabike.com (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com) for an overview of the route. I'd recommend signing the guestbook if you have specific questions for the author.

Just did this trip a few weeks ago (N. Tonawanda to Waterford; 366 miles, 5 1/2 days, self-supported, camping along the way). We jumped between New York State Bike Route 5 and the canal towpath, depending on how we felt about either at any particular time.

Sticking to the pathway is a nice flat ride, but skipping over to NYSBR5 can provide a lot more interesting and dramatic scenery; NYSDOT did a nice job choosing fairly low-traffic roads with good shoulders and we found New York drivers on this route to be surprisingly courteous (!).

A detailed, helpful, and free map is available from NYSDOT here: http://www.dot.state.ny.us/br5/index.shtml

If you have specific questions about our trip, feel free to email me. I can send you some pics of our trip and provide some guidance on where to camp if you're interested.
