Pacific Northwest - Vancouver (BC) starts their bike month, eh?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

And, it comes complete with police stepping up enforcement of bicycle laws and handing out "Information tickets!" (http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Police+target+cyclists+with+information+tickets/1646803/story.html)
Is it really against the law in BC to ride standing up? That must be harsh, considering some of the hills up there.

The "Standing Up" fine is simply a "WTF!?".
There's no other way to express what I feel about it.
The Critical Mass will probably start getting "hit" as people break-away to go home.
Though the VPD does escort the ride as "back-up" in order to avoid possible confrontations...

At one point in the story it mentions that the rider must be 'astride' the seat.
Ride while not astride seat: $109
The definition of astride is on or over and a leg on each side of. It is not defined as butt attached to seat.
When I pedal my butt is over the seat and I have a leg on each side of the seat. Maybe the law is to prevent riders form sitting on the handlebars, etc.

Exactly! It's similar to Washington's law which states a bicycle may not be ridden by more people than it was originally designed for; i.e. No peg rides, handlebar rides, rack rides, etc. (I'm interested to know how that works for an Xtracycle with a snapdeck and footie platforms, though.)

This concerns me as well: I have a good friend with an XtraCycle that this would affect.
Wow, what a misinformed article...typical newspaper sensationalizing the facts to get a rise.
For the truth read the comments of poster "Ladybugbicycle" to the news article. That poster speaks the truth.
