I am on the crew team and train hard 5 days a week. I also used to race in mountain bike races and do relatively well. I have been looking into trying to race road bikes but am unable to gauge my physical peformance on a road bike. I am wondering whether crew training and previous extensive mountain biking experiance will translate into good road biking performance. Thank you.

You might want to start with some fast group rides. As well as seeing how you stack up, you can start learning about riding in a pack, and if that appeals to you. You have an unusual situation in that your aerobic capacity is highly trained, but your legs are not. I'd say you need a coach.
