Road Cycling - Carbon fiber bars with quill stems

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've heard that Easton does not recommend using their carbon bars with non-open face plate stems (i.e. Quill stems, although some threadless stems would fall into this category...Moots) because of damaging the bar as you thread it through the stem. Is this true of all manufacturers of carbon bars; I've seen the ITM Unika bar on-line and it looks like there is some type of yellow warning label on one drop which probably states this recommendation/warning. I had a friend take an Easton EC70 (or 90) to a LBS and they were able to thread it without problems.
This maybe a moot point as I really want a bar with ergo tops (i.e. wings) which would require an open face plate design.

Abe

AbeI wouldn't want to try and thread an Easton through a closed face stem. I'd have your buddy unwrap his bars and look for scratches because I doubt seriously that they were able to get it through with "no" problems
Threading a carbon bar through a closed face stem can lead to scratches and possibly even delamination! Once carbon delaminates its integrity is GREATLY compromised and can result in failure.

I think I'm getting the point. Too bad; it seems that a carbon bar will have to wait as I don't feel like plunking down the change to convert to a full threadless set up. There are a couple quill stems out there with open faces but I'm not too keen on them.
Anybody with experience with the Cinelli quill converter which allows a threadless stem to clamp on to a quill base?
Thanks
Abe

There are some othe TTT, and ITM open face stems as
well as Modolo, check e-bay for quill stems.
