A few weeks ago I found a tired Motobecane Le Champion that was used as a racer. (It is in this thread.) (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=541654) Most of the the parts are off of it now and I've been cleaning everything up. When the tape came off of the bars it revealed some of its history and some interesting additions and drilled areas.

The bars are Atax Professional Guidons Philippe, and the stem is a Philippe.

The additions to the ends of the bars are pieces of older grey sprinkler riser pipe. The threaded ends made it convenient to screw them into the ends of the bars. With some drilled cable holes at the tips the bars were previously used with some kind of Barcons.......

There was a computer mount on the bars. I found a hole drilled on the underside of the stem at the angle as well as a hole drilled through the stem expander plug. Computer wire went into and down the stem, was cut and spliced together inside of the fork steerer tube, and exited at the small hole at the end of the fork tip just above the dropout where the sensor pickup was strapped on.....

There were no clamps for the brake levers. It has threaded metal plugs that the clamp attachment bolts go into, with holes above for the cable housings to go through........

Exit holes for the housings on the underside of the bars near the stem.......

These modifications are interesting. So, what modifications did you former racers make to your bikes to improve your bike for racing?

that's some serious cobbling...probably a retired engineer or mad scientist.
Just for grins: the brake lever mounting plugs look like "Riv-nuts" which are threaded doo-hickies installed like pop rivets, but are these metric or standard thread? (Cause I've never found them, yet, in metric)

Actually a pretty nice layout if you don't like all the wires and cables hanging out.
Must have been a real pain to feed the cable through the bars though.

Ken.

Proper Doohickies are never threaded! Although sometimes we are screwed.... :innocent:

The no brake lever clamps is a more interesting mod Ive yet to see before.. not sure I see the benefit of it though, I doubt there is any weight savings and it probably doesnt make wrapping your bars any easier either, cool stuff though!
