Oh I'd never criticize another artist's work. I truly do believe the msot important person who should be happy with their expression is the artist themselves, I just know that most people who shoot appreciate hearing someone else's opinion on their work.

quite literally, the bike was on it's side on the floor of my loft, hence the horizontal orientation. i was drinking chimay and the world seemed more beautiful and inspired me to shoot at f/8.

Give me a break. The bike is bleh, and the photos are not very good (from a photography POV). The whole post just reeked of artist snobbery to me, and so I had to call him out on it.

Anyways, in response to your original post, why does a critique have to be thoughtless? I don't think my critique is thoughtless. I'm all about creating art (I'm a writer), but when you post it on a public forum you open yourself up to criticism? What's the big deal? Criticism is a part of art.

I changed it because I didn`t really want to get into it or further the argument.

It was a thoughtless critique because you critiqued the artist`s sincerity and made no commentary on his picture. It`s the same form letter critique you could apply to anyone you wanted to accuse of being insincere with only having to change a word or two here and there.

I believe it takes far more skill to appreciate what an artist was trying to do than it does to bash their art, let alone their sincerity. As far as critique goes yours struck me as being vapid and self serving in the tradition of `I must know more about art because I am bashing this lesser artist`. Worse than any other sin you can commit on an internet message board, that kind of stuff is incredibly boring.

If you must know why I don't like the photos, it is mainly because of the angles and the fact that there isn't a single shot of the beer and the bike together (because I think that the color of the beer would look great next to those skid patches). It doens't take a professional photographer to realize those photos are whack.

You're assuming about a person's character again without knowing them. You certainly can't transpose the way you derive meaning in your life or your set of values onto another person so it's terribly short sighted to tell a person "I feel this way, and because I haven't given much thought to the interpretive nature of reality, I assume you must share the same value system and therefore you must have had different experiences to come to a different conclusion than the one I have". While the way you interpret your experiences led you to your conclusion, it's borderline ridiculous to assume that the only way to arrive at a different conclusion is to have had different experiences, or that your conclusion is the only possible one that can be correct. That's borderline ridiculous and if I were in your shoes I'd consider it a strong character flaw, but you're free to do whatever you want.

Taking a step back though, I think you're overreaching. I'm not an artist and don't claim to be. No far from it, I was drunk and I posted 7 photos on bikeforums.

The artistic gestalt, if any, comes from the public discourse over the photos.
