BMX - how to learn

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I bought I DK 8 pack last year but I haven't really got myself into riding bmx yet I've just been riding the bike around town. Now I want to learn bmx but I'm not sure how to approach the sport. I have woods near by with some decent trails where I could build some jumps but I'm thinking street/park would be more practical since theres a skate park down the road (not a specific bmx park though).
So should I just try to doing basic tricks from intructions of the web at the park and anywhere I can or is there some sort of class I should take or should I try to find somebody who knows how to ride and ride with them?

Start learning bunnyhops and manuals. Bunnyhops are easily the most important thing in BMX, I think anyways. Go to the park (with a skid lid of course) and just experiment with stuff. Ask the experienced guys for some help and go from there. You're starting out with a decent bike unlike some people so you're privileged in that aspect.

Keep your mind open. Don't put aside basic flatland tricks - they help in your overall bike handling and don't get caught up in "I'm a park/dirt/vert/flat/street" rider. Watch current Chad Degroot and see what I'm talking about.
Open your door and start pedalling. It helps to ride with others.
