"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Gloves when racing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Mostly crits for me. Sometime road races. Just not always.

i don't get it. i wear gloves in most races because i'm a cat 5 and i have had enough close calls. if i were a pro, i might never wear gloves, but i imagine there is an incentive for them to do so from the sponsorship.

Ok, so someone didn't wear gloves. So? I hate gloves and only wear them in crits.

There are crashes in all categories -- including pros -- and probably just as many.
bd - I dont get your point. lots of racers dont wear gloves.

i don't have a point. just a slow morning at work.
though I don't really blame you for missing the signs - most of my threads and posts are as mindless as this.
One reason many of us non-pros wear gloves is because we have to work with our hands. If we crash and mess up our hands it makes it harder to work and make a living.

After this I always wear gloves now, and in crits I'm wearing full fingered gloves. It took about a month for that wound to fully close up and I still have slight pain in the area from the impact.

I didn't used to worry about gloves too much. Then botto made a snarky comment (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=8518195#post8518195), and then I crashed and my gloves saved me a whole lot of my palms. So now I'm in the "gloves, always" camp (and with a better appreciation of how botto's snark can be useful)

yep. Look past Botto's internet meme-level status as a snarky b*stard, you'll find that he does indeed know a thing or two about cycling.

can't stand odd tanlines on my hands so no gloves for me. I'm sure I'll regret it sometime. I only wear gloves when I have to start wearing long sleeve jerseys.

I've been noticing Rahsaan Bahati has been wearing MTB gloves in crits lately, I know he also recently went down and opened his palm up too.
When I went down and wasn't wearing gloves I was on a nice leisurely recovery ride near the beach, almost didn't wear a helmet that day, didn't think twice about not wearing gloves; I was rueing that decision for a month.
I can dig all you cats who aren't wearing gloves, really I can. That's your decision, but I'm telling you between rock climbing, drumming and now cycling I've done a lot of things that have destroyed my hands. I have so much scared tissue on my knuckles just grazing them across rough surfaces opens up the skin... trust me NOTHING is more troublesome than a palm injury.

umd, what full finger gloves do you wear? I remember you saying somewhere that they were nice and breathable. I'm a computer major, so I need me hands/fingers. I wear a pair of PI gloves that aren't full finger, but I would like to pick up a pair of full finger gloves that aren't too hot for summer weather.

Only time I don't wear gloves is when I'm riding my TT bike. Otherwise I wear them even when training. I'm a film editor and I need my hands to be in good shape. I wear padless gloves, the new Giro Zero's are very nice. Besides what else am I going wipe the snot with?

They're not padded - I never liked padding.
I love them. They breathe very well, and I prefer leather over synthetic when it comes to my palms.
Here's a pic of me wearing them:

BG Ridge. Only a tiny bit of padding that wears out quickly...

One of my least favorite crash stories involves a friend who went down in a sprint finish with palm-gloves (no finger covering). His gloves got shredded, his palms were fine, but three of his fingernails got shoved completely backwards, hanging on at 90-degree angles. He had to go the emergency room... and it took the emergency-room doctor quite some time to clip and pull them off. Extremely painful.
As a result, I wear full-fingered gloves. Odds are that even if-or-when I crash, my fingernails won't flip like his... but its pretty simple insurance. In fact, in a sprint-finish crash of my own last summer, my gloves were torn across the fingers... but had I not been wearing the gloves, it would have been my flesh.

Yup, those hurt.
After years of skateboarding and getting injuries like that, I definitely try to wear gloves at most times. Training I don't care as much, but definitely for racing, though I haven't gone the long-fingered route yet.
I wear some "classic" gloves like this, just enough to protect the palms.

Though I did end up with funny tan-spots on the tops of my hands.. they're gone now but it was kinda funny looking.

Damn, that might be my least favorite crash story too.
I might give long fingered gloves a second thought on that note..

I tried some ridiculous but comfortable gloves for MTB at the LBS had plastic knuckle parts, I've been racing in winter long fingered gloves cuz that's all I have. I think i might pick up some MTB gloves because my hands are just pouring sweat at the end of a race, feels terrible.

Actually I can top all your hand injury stories I think.
In high school I used to ride street/freestyle and I had a lot of friends who rode dirt/bmx. One of them was at a local dirt jumping spot in So-Cal called Sheep Hills. I guess there was a piece of glass sticking out of the ground. Anyway he crashed out doing a tail-whip or some trick and went sliding on his hands... over the glass. Came within about a cm of taking his thumb off, got barely got movement back in his thumb after surgery.

Just my $.02, but I wear gloves for training and racing. I prefer the tactile feel of gloves, as I don't feel like I've got a solid grip on the bars without.

Yah because rode cyclists crash enough to learn to do that in a crash, we're not skateboarders.

I wear full finger leather rapha criterium looking gloves I bought from a street vendor when I race. Otherwise I wear classic crochet backs any time I'm riding, my hands sweat too much.

Only when I race. I've been thinking about going full finger after I took most of the skin off the back of my fingers in a crash last year.

I have 60% range of motion in my right index finger. Pain on damp days. Nearly ended my career as a professional musician were it not for an entire year of therapy and retraining. Hands are important.
Mostly when I race. Sometimes I forget.

For me I wear them except during a TT. I'll take my chances there.
Mostly I wear gloves to prevent nerve damage in my hands. When I first started riding I didn't wear gloves and after 3 months and 3000 miles I had a problem. Secondly by wearing gloves you can "clean" your tires when you roll through glass. Lastly, if you fall and put your hands out (I don't!) they can save you from some hideous road rash.

My first year in Belgium, we're barreling down one of those one-lane country paths they love to use. I see my roommate go tummy first after touching a wheel.
Because he was so skinny, his privates took the brunt. Ripped a giant whole right "there". The kid was a virgin until that day. His biggest worry was going to sleep that night in case he had one of those dreams.
Thanks for bringing back that memory. I love telling stories of his weeklong rehab.

What I want to know is now in heck did that rider lose his virginity immediately after that ride. You did say the he was "a virgin until that day." That must be the greatest HTFU ever!

A friend of mine was a baseball catcher in college. He was catching for a new guy that was really throwing hard and was pretty impressed. The pitching coach wanted to get right into the thick of things, so he decided to catch the new kid. He just stuck a cup in normal underwear, because he wasn't wearing a jock. The pitcher is throwing heat to impress the coach and the ball bounces off the thumb of the glove and nails the coach right in the cup.
That hurts bad enough.
The worst part is that is cracked the cup and flexed it inward enough to grab some bits of skin. Ugh.
[/Hi-Jack]
I wear team gloves when I race because when I pull up next to my teammates, they can tell who I am without really looking at me.
