Tandem Cycling - freindly tandem racing

My wife and I were wondering if there were organized distance tadem races anywhere?

You might try looking on a web search engine for tandem clubs in your area. Someone there might know.

I've certainly seen a bunch of info on rallies and so on. Surely someone's doing a century or something....

There are some Century rides that are timed (officially or unoffically). One that I'm aware of is the Davis Double Century in California in which tandem have participated. It's a long, hard race with lots of climbs. Tandem manufacture Burly has organized the only major tandem race that I'm aware of called the Burley Classic on the west coast which is a stage race open to real racers and others who dare. I've been in a few freindly tandem time trials (15 tandems or so). I've also seen tandem races on the velodrome at Trexlertown, PA. To participate your best bet would be "Century" rides which usually have various distances : full century, 1/2 century, metric century etc. While they are not actually races you can go as fast (or slow) as you want over the distance of your choice.

There aren't a lot of Tandem races around. There's the Co-Motion Classic Tandem Stage race in Eugene Oregon each year. I believe some of the regular weekend races in Oregon have tandem races as well.

Some time trials will have a tandem division. Here in Florida, its usually only the State Time Trial Championship.

there are also tandem races, both road and time trial as US Masters Nationals.

Everest Challenge has a tandem division, although it rarely draws many teams.

I've also seen tandem races on the velodrome at Trexlertown, PA.

Tandem track racing however is a quite specialized and potentially dangerous endeavor. Unless you're very experienced track racers, as well as a very experienced tandem team, I wouldn't do it.

Many UMCA (Ultra Marathon Cycling Association) races have a tandem category. My wife and I have competed in a few, including Calvin's Challenge 12-hour and Saratoga Challenge 12-hour/24-hour/96-mile. Their calendar is at http://ultracycling.com/events/races.php. The closest race to you is probably the National 24 Hour Championship in Michigan, but I wouldn't do a 24 hour race as your first race.

What kind of "distances" are you looking at? I've done the Race across America twice on tandems...there are also a handful of 500mile and shorter races.
