Commuting - I love the smell of Deisel in the mornin'

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It gives you that warmth, gives you a whiff of morning freshness, and nothing says "good health to you!" like a deep breath of Deisel Exhaust.
NOT
Anyone else get "exhausted" on their morning commute. I do, at least 2-3 *cough* times *cough* a morning *cough*
I definitely notice the diesel exhaust, but I find one large diesel truck less repulsive than a number of gasoline cars that use an equal amount of fuel.

School busses are the worst. They put the exhaust pipe about two feet off the deck and stand on the gas at every stop.
I'm just glad school is out for the summer.
Diesel exhaust is my #1 pet peeve. The local transit agency finally got rid of all their old street-level exhaust GM busses; all the new busses have top venting exhaust pipes now - a significant improvement.
Now the worst deisel vehicles are the smaller (12' to 18' or 24') local delivery trucks and the larger deisel pickup trucks (e.g. Ford F350, Chevy 2500 and big Dodge Rams) which all still have street level exhaust pipes.

Yeah I got blasted by a dodge truck, or ford or chevy... they all look alike these days.
Anyway I took a big whiff of that stuff just because I had to breathe. *HACK* *COUGH*. I'm ok. *COUGH* *COUGH* no really I'm OK... (passes out)*thud*

I can think of worse things I have to smell on my commute -- like the stench of the wastewater treatment plant I have to pass (there's no other route I can take at that point!). When the conditions are right it's pretty ripe!

Now you did it! Got all stirred up with all this Diesel talk, so tomorrow, after my early morning ride, I'm going to fire up the tractor & clear some brush. Vertical exhaust is the best way to go with a diesel.

Tree Trunk, I agree. Rural Iowa has many more pungent offerings than diesel smoke. There is a large hog confinement to the south of Ames. On a hot day when the wind is out of the south...wow, it may be organic but geez it'll curl your toenails!
Well if you live in the country maybe the smell of a commercial hog farm is the worst, but in the city, it's definitely the diesel exhaust...

Diesel exhaust is the worst I've had to encounter thus far. Although a leisure ride I do has a trash transfer station nearby, and woof does that stink!

I never noticed all these things when I used to drive to work. It's amazing how riding around in our tin can cars dulls our senses to the environment.

Passing a freshly flattened skunk less than six inches from the tire. Mmmmyum. Fresh morning air, that!

Just thought I'd mention, on the positive side of things, I did a 9.9 mile hilly, urban commute in 33 mins on my MTB on Friday, and that's including stopping at 8 sets of lights!
One really cool part of it was when I got stuck behind a double-decker bus (we have lots of them here in Dublin). The driver passed me on a downhill so I was able to catch back up at ~25 mph, and he pulled me along for over a mile at 31 mph (some down hills so I could get HR down). When he finally pulled over to pick up I was able to whizz down the outside. Sure I got some diesel fumes, but that drafting really gave me a buzz, particularly watching my bike computer and the cars barely keeping up beside me (limit is 30mph) :)
I didn't realize how badly the city stank until I started riding my bicycle for excersize at 4am every morning. The car polution, dead frogs, squirrels and birds smell nasty. Im scared that some day I'm going to come across a dead person's body since no one seems to leave the comforts of their home or car anymore.

I was behind a garbage truck for about a quarter mile this morning. Diesel AND rotten garbage. I've got to get up earlier so I can stop for a bit if this sort of thing happens again.

My weekend ride has a sewage treatment plant at one end and a garbage transfer station at another point. Otherwise its not too bad. Makes me want to get out of town though!
Pig farms in the morning!!!!!

The difference between Diesel Exhaust and a Bad Fart is that you have to breathe the former with no escape. With the latter, you can leave the room (after making ugly comments.)
I can tell where garbage trucks have been by the trail of nasty scummy liquids that track behind them. I avoid rolling over these as much as I avoid week-old roadkill carcasses and the tire patterns that dot the pavement after them.
No toxic particulates in either a fart or the aroma of pig farm!!!
Where I live the garbage trucks leave a trail of broken glass....
