I just got a set of shimano's pd-m520 pedals (a mountain bike pedal). aside from the hardware I expected (being the pedal, the cleat, and the stuff to attach the cleat) there are what appear to be four little turf-type cleats (rounded and metal on the end) and a plastic wrench for them. they look like they're supposed to screw in where the cleats do, but I can't fathom a good use for them. if you wanted to walk, maybe you can remove the pedal cleats and put these others in? Only thing I can think of right now.

I am using them on a road bike for city use, b/c they were cheap and someone I know likes them. maybe they have an off-road application I am not familiar/concerned with? Sorry no pics, spent my money on bike gear. btw, did check docs with pedal, no info or mention there.

Those are toe cleats. Some SPD shoes, mainly shimano, have two holes at the toe for cleats. They come in very handy for walking up slippery slopes. I don't used them when I'm on my MTB, but very nice for riding cross.
