Any suggestions of somesort of wrist guard which will allow one to still be able to hold handlebars proper and also protect the wrists from tearing of ligaments, breakage and the like, for when I heal and get back on my bike. I don't want to fall again and totally mangle what repair my body has done to my wrist already.

You should be able to find them at any pharmacy.
It's this thing that you strap onto your wrist and has a metal bar at the bottom. Prevents you from moving it but you still have the use of your palm and fingers. I wore one for a couple of years when I had carpal tunnel syndrome.

I'd check into the body armor that MTB riders where. You might find something there.
I suffered a Colles' fracture of the right radius several years ago. (No, it was NOT cycling-related!) After 6 weeks of immobilization, I used an elastic brace which included a flat metal plate. I rode the mountain bike for the first several weeks, to minimize the load on my wrist.
A person on USENET is currently using weightlifting gloves to protect his wrist. Evidently has some sort of strap around the wrist. Works well for him.
Wha'bout those hard plastic wrist guards that inline skaters use?
I'm not sure that it would give you the support that you want. Also ones I have worn for skating have plastic in the palm almost like a skid plate. I don't think that it would be very easy or comfortable to hold your handlebars. I think as mentioned earlier, that the pharmacy is your best bet.
Oh, right. NC's looking for something for support/immobilization, not impact protection. My bad. Well, as Emily Litella used to say, "Never mind!"
I want a little of both worlds: support and protection and a wee bit of immobilizatyion. I can scarifice that major part of immoblization now though. I think I am just afraid of being afarid of hurting it again really, if that make sense.
C
makes complete sense, I agree 100% with the elastic piece from the pharmacy....I had a friend who rode bmx for several months with those, and with daily riding it didn't hold up but for about 2 weeks before needing replacement, but it did the job.....
