I want to dress up my commuter this summer....and I'm broke. :-) I'd really like some bar tape to match my honey Brooks saddle but Brooks wrap just isn't in the budget. I got some Soma tape that is close but I didn't like how it looks - too light. My bars are rather scratched up and my brake levers are kind of crappy looking so I don't want to go with grips right now, although I'll probably switch out the brake levers this year as well. I'm planning to do fenders for sure.

Any thoughts on low cost alternatives to color matching a honey Brooks?

That's a great suggestion! I just need a Brooks honey saddle. :(

Yep, yellow or white with amber shellac. The white turns out only a slightly lighter shade. For comfort factor, install a layer of synthetic cork wrapped edge to edge before the cloth. It gives just enough cush to add comfort, without looking too thick.,,,,BD

Elkhide bar wrap on velo orange is about $25.00 takes a bit of time to lace up but put some proofide on them and they are so close its hard to tell they weren't dyed that way.http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb150/stringbreaker53/100_1421.jpg

I totally forgot about that stuff! I looked at it last year. I wonder if it will work OK on my moustache bars. It's not shaped at all is it?

Nope not shaped. It'll wrinkle a little at the bends which is nice. Looks very nice and I love mine. Like String said it's pretty damn close match after proofide.

Great! I just read on the site and they work with moustache bars. Thanks so much for reminding me of this!

+1 to both of them. That elkhide wrap is nice stuff and matches well after an application of proofide.

natural cork colored tape with shellac. it ends up looking like leather, kinda, but for much cheaper.

thanks! I actually ended up taking it apart, rebuilding it with sti and then selling it to a friend who wanted to get into riding. It looked cool I just didnt really did the way the frame road for some reason. Kindof dead feeling.

That bridgestone is sweet, I would love to find something like that to run errands on

http://www.torelli.com/parts/Tipounoparts.html Their tape looks very good and is more weather resistant than leather. MUCH cheaper than Brooks too.

Would that be vinyl?

Brooks honey bar tape...though I've read it bleaches. I proofided mine, and it turned much darker, but it matches the used saddle fairly closely.
