i know some are for memberships but both the yellow shirt and the red star both link to the membership. then theres the pilot's wings. purple stars? 1 or 3? is there a key for this stuff?

Red star is the old member ship.
Yellow shirt is ti membership which includes more features than ti.
The eagle is the Sheldon Brown memorial, which shows that you have donated to a charity.
Blue stars are moderators
Three blue stars are Forum Administrators.

thanks. this is something i've been wondering for a while now. so if i got a membership now (whether 1 or 2 years) it would be the yellow shirt, right?

how do you donate to a charity?

If you donate to any charity.. I donated time and materials to mine, actually. Let us know. :)

Sooo....maybe make this a sticky in this forum? I did a search and found several threads about it; took me 5 mins of searching manually before giving up and searching. Seems like a pretty valid question, and non-obvious. Kinda makes it more insular, too--less welcoming--to have these arcane icons that only the folks in the know know about.
