Sadly, a painted line on the roadway has failed to prevent a motorist from hitting a cyclist. Where does the cyclist go to get his money back? (Redemption for the false promise of safety.)
Around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, 911 dispatchers received the first report of the crash involving a pickup and bicyclist on Johnson Road east of Stag Drive, west of Shevlin Park, Oregon.
An initial investigation determined that Yarbrough was westbound on Johnson Road, riding his Colnago C30 competition-style road bicycle in the bike lane area.
Ring, also of Bend, also was westbound going about 50 mph at the controls of a blue 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.
Ring was cresting the grade west of Shevlin Park Road when he looked at his cell phone, also glancing in the rear-view mirror. (Ring told deputies he "reached for" his cell phone, but a friend told KTVZ.COM he actually had looked at the phone.)
While Ring was distracted from his primary responsibility of driving, he failed to negotiated a slight left-hand curve and traveled into the bike lane area.
The right front side of Ring's pickup struck Yarbrough's bike from the rear, causing Yarbrough to be thrown onto the pickup's hood.
After the impact, Ring slowed down "in a controlled manner" and Yarbrough slid off the hood of the pickup, landing on the westbound gravel shoulder.
The bike was dragged beneath the pickup's front end about 130 feet from the point of impact, the lieutenant said, The pickup sustained major right front-end damage and the bicycle was heavily damaged.
Authorities said alcohol and drugs don't appear to be factors in the crash.
Yarbrough was flown by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend, where he was upgraded from critical to serious condition. He remained in serious condition Wednesday morning, but a work colleague at WebCyclery said he was "starting to wake up" after suffering a concussion and other, lesser injuries.
Ring was cited Wednesday on three traffic violations, one day after the crime that seriously injured a bicyclist west of town, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office announced.

This criminal, Mr. Ring, would he have turned away from his task at hand if he thought Mr. Yarbrough was in his way? If Mr. Yarbrough had been riding in the travel lane, would his presence have been so easily dismissed by Mr. Ring? Would Mr. Yarbrough have taken the lane at that location if he were permitted to do so by Oregon law?
