Training & Nutrition - Question on sodium and sweat and maybe food

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I recently had to resort to eating ramen (college kid budget ran tight so yea shin ramen almost everyday) I checked the nutrition label and noticed it has like 1.2 grams of sodium per serving. Two servings to a block -> 2.4 g sodium. Additionaly I put hot paste in it (kinda a lot [sriracha]) which has .1 g per tbsp I prob put about 6 into the ramen.

I only really eat one block a day, and end up drinking water usually the rest of the day. Occasionally if I get hungry Ill stop by and grab a chicken salad from the store if I can afford it (6$! blah) but other than that block of ramen Im usually just drinking water.

To get rid of the sodium I started (in addition to running and cycling outside) stationary cycling indoors for an hour. I sweat a pool in there so I figured it would be a good way to get rid of all that excess sodium, but today one of the trainers came up to me and said that I shouldnt be sweating that much and its unhealthy. I personally wasnt sure but he said he can't do anything to stop me but let me know that bit of information. I thought I'd ask you guys.

Is this an alright way to get rid of the excess sodium? when I wrung out my clothes I got maybe quarter liter or so of water into it (this doesnt include the sweat on the floor bike and all that other junk).

Biking outside and running outside (usually run 3 miles at 6 min/mil pace and bike 10 miles at random pace [to many stoplights]) doesnt seem to cause me to sweat as much probably because I am actually moving.

I don't know if it really matters but I'm 5'4, 21 years old, and last time I weighed myself (bout 3 weeks ago -> 145 lb)

Normally I wouldnt be asking this but the trainer guy (and since he was a trainer I took it somewhat seriously) said that much sweat meant that there was something wrong with me and when I told him what I ate he said I might have a stroke on the cycle next time. Personally I think he was half full of s*** but I dunno.

While I'm on it... I know eating a pack of ramen a day is not healthy at all in any way but I don't have a cheaper solution really. I dont mind putting in an extra couple bucks a week if it lets me eat a bit healthier so I'm open to suggestions in that sense (I was thinkin bout spending 8 dollars and getting a bottle of centrum).

Sorry about the long post

Rice and beans would be cheaper and healthier. Rice and beans have complementary proteins.... ramen has essentially no protein, and a lot of fat. Even regular pasta would be better and cheaper than ramen. Instead of a chicken salad from the store, which has about $1 worth of ingredients, buy your own chicken and lettuce and make it. Learning how to cook even simple food means that you don't have to pay for expensive conveinence food. It's how I got through college on a very tight budget. I still do it- right now I'm making my own granola.

You appear to be sweating more when you ride indoors because you don't have air flow to evaporate the sweat. So it pool up and soaks your clothes. You may be sweating more outdoors, but it's evaporating and cooling you like it's supposed to.

Sweating that much is probably not bad for you. It's no good for the equipment and it's kind of disgusting but an hour indoors isn't going to kill you. I find that a lot of gym trainers don't know much about exercise other than weight lifting for body building. But if you are already running and riding a little, some excess sodium probably isn't going to cause you any problems.

If you learn to cook healthier food though, you won't have to worry about it and you'll ride and run better as well.

Thanks Ill look into the beans and rice. I should have mentioned theres no actual way to cook in this room except through the microwave. I guess I could nuke the chicken and itll still be better than eating ramen. Guess I should do that. Thanks again.

It's OK to sweat. I ride with a fellow who sweats so much you'd think it was raining if you rode behind him. He rides 1200k's, so it's OK, right? The recommended sodium intake/day is 1500 mg, which is about 3/4 teaspoon of salt. I sometimes have to struggle to get that because I eat all natural and no meat.

The sodium in ramen is mostly in that little flavor packet. You can leave that out if you want to cut back on sodium. Thumbs up on the Red Rooster sauce! You could weight youself before and after excercise to figure out how much you're actually sweating. 1 pint = 1 pound. Any idea what your blood pressure is?
