I spend about two hours trying to install my new VO rando rack. The tang is all bent up ready for install. Just a few more things to do before it's done. Boy what a pain in the butt! Two hours of work and I'm still not done. That is definitely not a plug and play bike part. And it is likely to be a permanent fixture on my bike due to the complexity of removal, which I'm not all that happy about.

Now that I'm done I have an idea that might have made installation easier. Would it be possible to install a star nut to the bottom of the fork steerer tube? The star but being the thing installed at the top of the fork steerer tube. Seems that all one would need to do once the star nut is installed is drill a hole in the tang and install?

looks like this would work. similar to your idea but requires a fork crown bolt.

I believe you are talking about a fork crown daruma.

I used a slightly different approach to that recommended by VO installing my VO rando racks (http://www.veloweb.ca/garagepages/vo_rackinstall.html).

doubtful as you will have bolts crossing if you are using caliper brakes.
if canti, maybe - but just use the daruma bolt. i have it in use for my honjo fenders...

the mark's rack from riv goes on (and is much more adaptable) easier... but yes, i leave mine on because it means messing with the brake, fenders, etc.
