Actually, this is a happy ending to a very dramatic spring in our house. My daughter's beloved hunter/jumper broke his leg in March, and had to be put down. Very traumatic, as I'm sure you can appreciate.
We've been searching for a replacement, found this fellow a month ago, and finally got through the vet checks, and assorted other details to get the horse moved yesterday.
I am not a horse person myself; never have been. But my daughter has been doing this since she was 7, and has been incredibly thoughtful and responsible, so we took the plunge into ownership a couple of years ago (after 6 years of riding lessons, borrowing horses, etc.). You know your kid is dedicated to something when she has to leave home after dinner on a winter night to shovel s*** in the 35-degree-rain, and does this (mostly without complaining) twice a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
Plenty of times when I'm biking home on a dark, wet commute in the winter I run into her walking home from the barn, as she has pretty much worn a path between our house and the barn (about 1.5 miles from our house).
What does this have to do with cycling? Well, when the wife/daughter are at the barn all day on the weekend, what do you think I am doing with all the unsupervised time? It's not mowing the lawn, I can promise you that...
