Mix the Canadian accent with the Midwestern accent and take into consideration the large Finnish population in the western upper peninsula and you have got quite a regional dialect. It's pretty entertaining to watch the reactions of people who have never experienced it.

and to quote wiki:

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_Peninsula_of_Michigan). In some of these areas, pasties are a significant tourist attraction, including an annual Pasty Fest (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pasty_Fest&action=edit&redlink=1) in Calumet, Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calumet,_Michigan) in early July. Pasties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan have a particularly unusual history, as a small influx of Finnish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_people) immigrants followed the Cornish miners in 1864. These Finns (and many other ethnic groups) adopted the pasty for use in the Copper Country (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_Country) copper mines. About 30 years later, a much larger flood of Finnish immigrants found their countrymen baking pasties, and assumed that it was a Finnish invention. As a result, the pasty has become strongly associated with Finnish culture in this area.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasty#cite_note-context-5)

Per wiki, "the origins of the pasty are largely unknown".
Untrue, the wise Clifford C. Clavin, Jr. would have you know the pasty got its name from midwesterners' year round pasty white skin tone.
