Recreational & Family - Is this a decent bike for someone to grow into?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If she rides it, it's a good bike.

looks like a decent bike for casual riding
best thing you could do, however, is go with her to a good shop and have her try out some bikes
even if it's a gift - she needs to put butt to seat and find the most comfortable bike for her
she's NEVER going to ride 20 mile stints (or even 10 miles) if she hates the bike
a good shop is one where:
1) they've got a wide selection of brands and styles
2) there's no pressure from the sales staff, yet...
3) there's sales staff willing to help you when you need it
4) the sales staff listen to you and your requirements - that includes keeping in your price range
5) the sales staff spend time with you answering all of your questions even if you're clearly not buying anything that day

Does your wife like the bike??
I'd like an Orbea Diva in Pink ;)

If you are not determined to buy new, there are often a ton of hybrids listed on craigslist, usually in almost new condition at less than 1/2 price of new.
if she rides it, it's a good bike.

Well, now we know what you expect from your bf if he proposes.

No I'd rather have a ring than a bike, sorry I'm a traditionalist, well other than I dont like diamond solitaires. He has to make it past the first few months though before we can even be thinking along those lines. That maybe my goal but crikey thats probably a little ways off :P.

I'm moving this to Recreation since you're not considering a road bike for the lady :)

Does she ride now? I would never spend $5XX on a bike for someone who may end up not riding it, but maybe you're richer than me. Just get something cheap (in good working order) and see how it goes. If she gets hooked then go shopping!

"Looking to get my wife riding" doesn't sound very promising. That means "I like riding, so I'm going to buy her a bicycle." "Wife looking for bicycle" would be way more promising.
I will point out that you can ride 20 miles on just about anything if you want to. And they don't make a bike so fine that it forces people to ride it that don't want to. Maybe that's in the works somewhere...

Yeah, that amuses me too.... Chris' Mexican Food & Ice Cream. The small strip mall that they demolished a while ago (where they're building the new Kroger now) had Chris' Ice Cream. Then they moved into the building we're in. Then a Mexican guy from California bought it and kept the name. But added Mexican Food to it. lol.
They have really good tacos and burritos.

Unlike me, he's there every day, so whenever you want to stop in is fine.
