"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Link to USAC rule regarding aero wheel covers?

I know my disc cover is legal, but I got in trouble for it at Collegiate nationals because the official checking my bike said it wasn't. I ended up using my ksyrium trainer wheel for the TTT. This time (state TT) i want to print out a copy of the rule and bring it with me. I can't find it on the USAC website, but i know it's there. Any help?

It's not illegal for USAC events. It is illegal for events that are run on UCI rules, like Nationals. So the official at nationals was right, but you shouldn't have a problem at the state TT.

Collegiate promoters almost probably specified in the permit that "this event is run under UCI rules" and that's why you weren't allowed. That's how it was for a lot of ours anyway. Sometimes they enforces them, sometimes it only said USAC rules.

You mean you think there's exactly a 50% chance they specified UCI rules in the permit? In any case whether they did or not, as mentioned above, UCI rules apply at all national championship events.

The previous comments were correct in that Collegiate Nationals were run under UCI rules regarding bike measurements. Local collegiate races are not. So while the wheel covers were not legal in Ft. Collins they would be OK in most local or state level races (but not other Nats, Worlds qualifiers, NRC races, etc.)

The rule is 1M1(b): There may be no protective shield, fairing, or other device on any part of the bicycle, which has the effect of reducing air resistance except that spoke covers may be used. I always suggest that people download the USAC rulebook and at least peruse through it if they are going to race - you are amazed at what you will find!

The UCI does not allow wheel covers as they are considered a fairing (no structural value). They were going to be banned from USAC as well but several groups apparently complained pretty vocally.

What is a "spoke cover", as specified in 1M1(b)?

A wheelcover, like the CH Aero.
