General Cycling Discussion - Bike noob, looking to get a new bike

Well, I am looking at starting to commute to work on a bike now, help save some gas money and get some cardio during the morning and afternoon. Now its only a 4-mile stretch of road between my apartment and work, but I do not want just a road bike, because I intend to take the bike out on the back roads and trails near my work after I am done for the day before I go home. The terrain back there varies between paved road, hard packed dirt roads, soft sandy roads, trails in the woods and paved roads so old, they might as well be gravel.

I have not rode a bike for about 10 years so, I have no idea where to start looking or what types of bikes to be looking at.

Remember, no matter what bike you buy, it won't be the best one for you. What are the odds you'll get it right before you even start riding? So buy a decent inexpensive one, probably used, and get a different one in six months after you know what you like and don't.

If you plan to ride many different terrains your best strategy is having 2 or more sets of wheels with different tires.

A good hardtail mt. bike with a good "lockout" fork will serve you well. I can go any place that I want, and at a decent speed with my Gary Fisher. Go to a good shop and see what they have to offer.

I would suggest a hardtail over full suspension if your play involves off-road. Make sure the hardtail has threaded eyeleys for a rear luggage rack, this turns a nice toy into useful transportation.
