Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Rim Drilling & Rim Question

Hey all-

So I'm building up my first bike and have a question about rims. I'm looking into the Velocity Deep V Rims and have a question about rim drilling. What is the typical amount of holes for a rim? I assume that applies to the number of spokes. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And what do people think of the Velocity B43's? Would these fit on a Surly Steamroller?

Rim drilling count = number of spoke holes on the hub +1 (for the valve stem)

there was a time when the 'typical' number of spokes/holes was 36 or 32. some light racers might have used 28. they were always multiples of 4. today with the fancy deepV rimes I think some have as few as 16

why are you drilling a rim?

not drilling, buying. i'm ordering deep v's from thebikebiz.com and they offer different numbers of holes for the rim. wasn't sure what this meant, but now i'm clear.

He had to ask about hole count on the rim. Pretty sure he's not lacing these up himself.

I know what you mean Clifton. when I go into a new shop and ask for weird stuff before they get too worked up I make a joke about needing a 27' spoke. that is a great icebreaker sometimes.

I have no idea how to lace wheels. I'm slowing buying the pieces to this bike and the Deep V's were wicked cheap on the website so I decided to go for it. I got to find some hubs and I'm going to have a LBS lace them for me. Why not save some coin?
