Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bad Shoes for Riding with Clips

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

There have been an absolute ton of threads about which shoes are good for riding with clips, but I have decided to start a thread with the opposite goal - to show which shoes not to get for riding with clips.
Please post name of shoe and reason why it is bad for riding with clips
Asics Courtstar - side pieces get caught under the straps, difficult to get into the clips because of this.

Sperry Topsiders. I have some and figured I'd clip in in my hallway. Damn those seams on the top are uncomfortable...

Any of the wide, squishy skate shoes SUCK, at least on my pedal/cage combo.

Yeah I have noticed that skate shoes suck too. I am in the market for something different but I can't decide what I want.

Indoor soccer shoes. They're narrow & stiff(er)
I only tried riding in skate shoes, because I was riding to a relatively close area to do some slalom skating practice, with my board on my back..

I don't understand people wearing dunks period, but I also don't understand all the neon, day-glo colors either.

From experience, flip-flops are possibly the worst things imaginable.

Yup. have been for quite a few years, just haven't been on there a lot lately- been busy with park & slalom, and i don't need much new info on that stuff.

Yeah, once I learned about bearings and trucks blahblahblah, it got old very quickly. That, and I got tired of Dervish threads.
Ontopic: flip-flops. Takes me a block to get them in the clips.

you've obviously never ridden in a pair of skate shoes with vulcanized bottoms, once you have correct your statement. granted dunks are lame and rarely come in vulc bottoms, i ride in emerica francis shoes and they're perfect. vulc bottoms allow for a clean entry from my played out toshi/mks setup and are a perfectly flat surface with no ups/downs to **** things up.

Off Topic: WHAT!? Those are what make the Fish! I agree though, I stopped learning anything about skating/gear about a year ago on the Fish.
On Topic: The slip-on vans that I longboarded in for a year. The soles are as close to holes whithout actual holes as you can get. They have zero support, basically like riding barefoot, but not. They do slide in my clips nicely though.

Any shoe where the top is thin/flimsy, if you're skidding anyways. Also Asics work fine for me, though I wear a different style.

Haha, I think I've seen you riding around red square then. I'm a big fan of Asics too, and have had the same ones in
http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=35529 for the past two years. I was considering getting a new pair and saw the white/red/blue ones online, so they stood out when I saw them on you.
Blue bike from what I remember?

Ah no, I wear that brand just not those colors. I have it in black/grey, so nope didn't see me or at least I'm not the one on the blue bike.
I ride a Masi Speciale LTD

I've never had a problem riding with Mick Fanning ed. Reef sandalts to class but Clarks Wallabees absoulutely blow. the square-ish toe section is the poopiest

stiff is a vague term, it all depends on who's wearing them. stiff for me isn't stiff for you which is too stiff for him. this thread is like debating which condoms to use...whichever works for your dick, and pleases the action in hand
They've got really thin soles, and not much in the way of support. They're as stiff as your foot is.

I find the mexico 66 still enough, not as stiff as I would want, but gives a pretty good feel.

The soles are thin and perforated.
I take mine out and slap some Superfeet in them.
Mine have lasted me forever, but I think a replacement pair is in order, especially since those white/blue/red ones are on sale for $60 online :)

Actually, riding in high heels/wedges is sometimes more comfortable than chucks/vans. They typically have a stiffer sole and slide into the clips easily. Not all, but some. Just sayyin.

it sounds yet again like those asics are not very good, but i think many people still use them for their aesthetics.

I ride these ... <3 velcro. The cloth has started to come off but lack of shoelaces is nice.
Anyhow, my offering:

What does "not very good" really mean in the context of how most of us ride, most of the time?
I wouldn't race on a track with them, no.
They're excellent for commuting, or just pounding around in.

All my Vandals and SB's are too bulky for the track pedals clips/straps. The soles on my Chucks and Vans Eras are too soft and the fabric up top is too thin. So far the best ones I've tried are my DVS JDubs and Cons CTS. Oh, and my Adidas driving style shoes that I wear when tracking the car.

I didn't get them with the intentions of one day riding in them. I got them because I like the way they looked. 2 years down the road, I got a bike. I wore my shoes while biking. It was pretty comfortable.

i rode in paths for a while, liked them a lot. the padded tounge of skate shoes works well with clips similar to the soma- anything with wide clips holding the straps open.
brooks running shoes = suckage. the fat part that is the ball of your foot is very wide compared to the arch area, making it near impossible to keep straps tight without constantly adjusting them, and having to loosen them before unstrapping. this caused me to fall a few times.

KEEN shoes.
They have huge rubber toe areas that won't fit in clips.

I ride in these, they get me around town just fine but not stiff enough to take to the track or do a race in. No worries of getting laces in the chain either
