Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Making my first fixie Peugeot AO-8

Pick up this rust/dust bucket at a garage sale yesterday for 15 bucks, spent the rest of the day stripping it down/cleaning it.

Then it struck me how beautiful the bike looked without components! I wanted a fixed gear! (makes entrance to fixie society)

What is the easiest/cheapest way to make this into a fixie? btw, the rear wheel is a flywheel.

My lbs (rock n road) told me that:
Track Hub = 45 bucks
Spokes = 36 bucks
Labor = 40 bucks
Cog = 30 bucks
Lockring = 15 bucks...

Thats kind of pricy, or should i find some parts off CL?

Hey Bob,

All you would really need is a fixed wheel with a cog/lockring installed and you'd be good to go assuming you have a spare front wheel laying around somewhere. I say hunt CL for a rear fixed wheel. I sold mine just the other day for $80 (wheel, cog, lockring, tube, tire).

You'll probably want to make sure you get the right sized cog for your needs as well and see how that matches up with the chainring you plan to use.

If you wanted a whole wheelset I bought Alex rims laced to formula hubs + cog/lockring from Benscycle for $120ish a long while ago.

As far as the rear wheel goes, it might be cheaper just to find a used one on CL, but there are tons of cheap components that pop up all the time on both CL and ebay. I just found a formula lockring for $9 shipped by doing a quick google search.

i think that i might just pick up a set of wheels, they are steel 27' on there.

This has nothing to do with you converting that to fixed but did you buy a new chainring or did you get it with that one allready on it?
Because I bought that same one off ebay for my peugeot. haha.

I dont have any experience with Vueltas, but Alex rims have never steered me wrong. Considering you're getting the whole wheelset for $100 it seems like a decent deal. I sold my rear wheel alone for $80 a few days ago

you should keep the existing cranks to avoid french bottom bracket woes.
same with the headset/stem because they use french sizing. the seatpost as well, but if you remove the shim from inside the seat tube, you can fit i think a 26.8mm seatpost if i remember correctly....

Assuming that's the original wheel, it is likely to be French thread. If so, an ISO track cog will *not* fit, nor will an English thread BB lockring serve as a "suicide hub" lockring. A replacement wheel with a true fixed hub (or flip/flop) is probably the best solution. The bottom bracket shell will also be French thread, as will be the pedal threads. If you're on the cheap, just use the existing crank and pedals. Otherwise, keep the French thread bottom bracket cups and get a standard square-taper axle and crank that will use standard 9/16" x 20tpi pedals.

or you can go to velo-orange since they finally released their french threaded bb

you need a fixed rear wheel and a prayer that your $15 bought you a functional BB, cranks, and headset, or you're in for a headache.

cranks, headset, and BB all work! spins like a dream.

now i need a cog, the 3/32" did not fit the chain.

What size should i get? 1/8th? 16t? the front chainring is a 52. I have some hills in the area, but nothing serious. Thanks. btw, im loving the new wheels

those cranks look like they are gonna implode the minute you put a chain on there

^ Why? Those are heavy steel cranks, they should be solid.

i know a guy who has a UO8 fixie, damn thing is a rust bucket and still uses same cranks for 2 years, skids and everything.

So the gearing must be 1/8" right (since its not3/32) ? i have some moderate hills in our area, but not much besides that. 73 Gear inches would be fine?

Just because the cranks are heavy and steel doesn't make them good cranks because they are still cottered cranks. Will they explode, maybe, maybe not. I wouldn't ride them if they were my only source of braking.

I don't understand why the 3/32 chain doesn't work but if it doesn't 1/8 will work. 1/8 chain will work on all 3/32 components, but not the other way around.

52/16 is 87 gear inches so that is really high w/o brakes, no foot retention, on the street and being a n00b. If you must keep those cranks and that chainring you should be looking for a cog in 19 (73 GI) or 20 (69 GI)

If it were me, I would ditch the current cranks/chainring, drop the money for a new BB from velo orange, buy a budget crankset and go from there. It may cost you a few more bucks up front, but in the long run you will have way more options to you for chainrings and GI.
