has anyone elso noticed how cheap the track bikes are?
like the bianchi pista concept frameset. it's cheaper than a road frameset of similar quality.
any ideas on reasons behind the low prices?
I'm seriously consider riding at the velodome. instead of worring about the cost my new fear would be of falling off the banks... :)

Less frame mass, less components, and a well used frame design.

Well, I bought a fixed gear for 2 reasons. One was because I wanted a good work-out and having only 1 speed definitely works you out. Two was because the Langster that I bought was much cheaper than the Allez Sport that I had my eye on.

Less frame mass on track bikes ?? Its Reynolds 520 which is a bog standard chromoly, used in hybrids and mid-range touring bikes.
If you want a pro-grade carbon track bike you can pay $several k, but there are top riders using entry-level track bikes, and riding fast. They do use high-end wheels though.

the bianchi pista concept frame is aluminum.
the chromed bianchi pista is steel, costs like, $500-$600, and comes as a complete bike.
mass produced track frames/bikes are always going ot be cheaper, especially the completes, because most times, manuifacturers put like, bottom of the barrel components on them, whereas a complete road bikes will have better components as the price increases. however, a really nice, custom-built steel track frame can run anywhere from $700-$1200, and then you have to put parts on it. i think you'd still end up spending less on a track bike in the long run, unless you were getting one of those BT carbon frames with a rear disc wheel like the aussie team rides...

Less frame mass- the rear spacing is only 120mm, no derailluer hanger, no braze ons.
Mass is not weight.
